Last year’s Wales Rally GB was one of the most successful on record and the Welsh Government has announced it will provide funding to support the event for the next two years.
Assembly Member for Wrexham Lesley Griffiths, who attended last year’s rally, has welcomed the decision and believes the extra capital will help replicate the success of the 2013 event.
Wales Rally GB took place last November across North Wales and provided a multi-million pound boost to the region, attracting thousands of spectators as well as being watched by 600 million viewers worldwide.
The Welsh Government will provide up to £1.5m per annum to support the staging of the Rally in 2014 and 2015, subject to evaluating the impact of the events against agreed targets.
Wrexham AM Ms Griffiths commented:
“Having previously been based in Cardiff, the decision to move the Wales Rally GB to North Wales proved to be an inspired decision, revitalising the competition and becoming a major success story.”
“The event was great fun and a wonderful showcase for the area, attracting a worldwide audience, with spectators and journalists from across the globe descending on North Wales to witness the world class racing.”
“The people of North Wales really got behind the event and were incredibly supportive.”
“I am delighted the Welsh Government has shown their commitment and agreed funding for the Wales Rally GB over the next two years, enabling organisers to build on that initial momentum and develop on their great success.”
