Welsh Icons’ Single of the year Reaches No. 1 in the Download Charts

You may have read about the success of 15-year old Wrexham singer, Becca White last year; after being invited to perform at Swnfest in Cardiff, curated by Radio One’s Huw Stephens, a performance at the Llangollen Fringe with Meic Stevens and lots of airplay on Radio Cymru, the first album was a great success and she dominated the Myspace Techno charts for much of the year.

In the summer of 2010, producer John Grindell suggested she might like to try a version of “Hide and Seek” by Imogen Heap, since a sample from the song had produced a chart success for Jason Derulo (Watcha Say). Becca agreed and video producer and life-long friend of John’s, Phil Goodwin, agreed to produce a video. Much to the surprise of all concerned, hits were up to a thousand within a very short time and John and Becca decided it would be a worthy track on the second album. However, the team at Welsh Icons (that’s us) spotted the video and voted it Welsh Single of the Year! Interest grew and by the end of December it was clear that they had something major on their hands.

As a result, over Christmas, John worked hard with MCPS and Imogen Heap’s publishing company to clear the copyright and then turned his attention to Juno Records to see if they could release the single at short notice as a download and CD. They agreed! The rest is history because by 1am on the morning of the release, the song had already gone straight into the download charts at number 2 based on advance sales.

Becca and John would like to thank all of you for your amazing support throughout 2010 and look forward to a successful 2011 for everyone!

Breaking News: Becca has now reached number one in the download charts ahead of remixes by Taio Cruz, Usher, B.O.B., Katy Perr
