Bangor University‘s Neuadd Powis certainly rocks every other Friday, these days!
First up were Kharis and Samara, who took over the dance floor with their seductive belly-dancing performance, wooing the audience and drawing the local belly-dancers to join in! Samara finished her set with a table-top dance, much to the surprise of the men that sat around the table!
The lights, the acoustics, the astonishing mural as a backdrop, and the delicious menu, all created a special, warm, friendly and fun atmosphere for the Cabarets.
Said Dyfan Roberts, Arts Development Officer “I’m thrilled that Bangor people gave the Cabaret Powis season such a fantastic start. It just proves that everyone, whatever age, will enjoy food, music and a good night out. Roll up for the next one!”
On December 4th, Cabaret Powis will present a wonderful Welsh-language Stand-up Comedy Night with three of our top Welsh comedians, Tudur Owen, Eilir Jones and Beth Angell. Tudur Owen is extremely busy these days; he has just finshed recording the popular S4C chat show, Tudur Owen O’r Doc and is currently writing a hilarious ‘PC Leslie Wynne’ Christmas Special. But on 4th December, he’ll be performing at the Cabaret, doing what’s closest top his heart – stand up. “Live Comedy is different to everything else” he explained. He loves to push all boundaries when performing live, it becomes redder!! He adores having fun with the audience.
Beth Angell’s comedy derives from her everyday activities. She explores the funny side of what usually makes her angry. “Women have to put up with so much stuff and they can really drive us up the wall, but by taking a step back we can see that everybody experiences these things and actually we can create humour out of these circumstances.”
Eilir Jones is one of the most well-known Welsh comedians. For years now, he’s been connected with performing and writing blue comedy dramas with Cwmni Bara Caws. On screen, he’s better known as Ffarmwr Ffowc. Between these three comedians, a festival full of laughs is awaiting the audience!
The last Cabaret for 2009 on December 18th will host a Christmas Party. We’ll be looking forward to the weird and wonderful Carnival of The Bizarre with they’re erotic, exotic and scary performances! And to end this year’s party with a bang, the number one Welsh band Derwyddon Dr Gonzo will woo us back onto the dance floor with their very entertaining “Afro-funk-gypsy-hip-hop-punk” material.
More cabarets are also being organised for Spring/Summer 2010 – including Folk night, Jazz night, C Comedy stand-up and a Latin night. Look out for them!
Cabaret Powis is part of the Pontio programme which is supported by Bangor University, Arts Council of Wales and Cyngor Gwynedd.
