The Welsh Liberal Democrats’ plans for concessionary bus schemes for young people, students and part-time workers came a step closer to becoming a reality last night when the Welsh Government agreed to support the party’s plans.
In their debate in the National Assembly, the Welsh Liberal Democrats called on the Welsh Government to introduce a ‘young travellers’ rate for 16-18 year olds and students. The party also emphasised the importance of a season ticket for part-time workers. The Welsh Government agreed to support the debate and called on its bus policy advisory group to look at how the government reviews its policy.
Eluned Parrott, Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Minister for Transport, said:
“Our plans would make a huge difference in helping to build a stronger economy and a fairer society, enabling every person to get on in life. I am pleased the Welsh Government has supported our debate and the Welsh Liberal Democrats will continue to work to ensure these plans become a reality.
“Part-time workers are at a disadvantage because they face the choice between buying a season ticket that they cannot make full use of, or paying peak time fares each day to get to work. A part-time season ticket will put money back in the pockets of the lowest paid workers and help people to access work and training opportunities.
“Affordable public transport is key to enabling young people to access work, education, training and apprenticeships. That is why the Welsh Liberal Democrats are calling for a national concessionary scheme for young people aged 16-18, as well as those in full time education.”
