Welsh Minister for Children, Education and Lifelong Learning breakfasts with school pupils in Abertillery

The Welsh Minister for Children, Education and Lifelong Learning Leighton Andrews AM has breakfast with pupils in Abertillery to celebrate their success in a national competition.

Queen Street Primary was awarded the title by judges of the National Breakfast Club Awards organised by learning charity ContinYou and sponsored by Kellogs.

Former Headteacher Jan Twomey invited the Minister to the school to help celebrate their breakfast club success as well as achievements in twinning and French exchange visits.

The Minister was given a guided tour of the school and was treated to a few songs by pupils before tucking into a healthy breakfast.

The Minister said: “I would like to congratulate Queen Street Primary School on their achievements in the Breakfast Club Awards. It was a pleasure to visit the school and see how much the children are benefiting from their award-winning breakfasts.”

Queen Street Primary was one of a few schools chosen to first pilot the Welsh Assembly Government’s free school breakfast club initiative back in 2004.

Councillor Steve Bard, Executive Member for Education, says: “Breakfast clubs are very popular in primary schools here in Blaenau Gwent. The pupils really enjoy them and it is a great way to interact and socialise with their friends and get a good healthy start to the school day.”
