Coleg Sir Gâr retained their Urdd Welsh Schools U18 National Sevens title in Llanelli when they fended off stiff challenges to continue their domination of the WRW sponsored event.
They beat Coleg Gwent 38-7 in the final to reel off their fourth consecutive win at the ever-popular end of season tournament.
They did not have it all their own way as both Cowbridge CS and Neath Port Talbot College caused them more problems than usual but they were certainly the most consistent and best drilled side on view.
After outplaying Swansea College, Cwmcarn HS and Coleg Meirion Dwyfor at the pool stage they dismissed St Cenydd CS 47-0 to ease through into the last eight.
Two Carwyn Thomas tries and one from centre Luke Williams edged out Cowbridge 21-12 but there was an even harder tussle in the semi-final with old rivals Neath PTC.
Two tries from wing Nathan Brooks and one from Liam Ward put NPTC 17-5 up after Owain Powell had got one back from CSG who looked rattled for the first time in the tournament.
They kept their composure however and twice scrum-half Luke Treharne raced away before victory was finally clinched by wing Tom Ellis-Williams.
Coleg Gwent – made up largely on Dragons Academy players – fought through the bottom half of the draw with excellent wins over Preseli 19-7 and then Strade 31-22.
Both backs Tom Ashmead and Jon Prosser got a brace of tries apiece against Strade whose Liam Hutchings grabbed four tries but still ended up on the losing side.
The challenge from Coleg Gwent in the final never materialised, their one try coming from skipper Bradley Hill against six well-crafted tries for the Llanelli boys.
The muscularity of Luke Hamilton, Lawrence Reynolds and Kirby Myhill and the speed of Luke Treharne and Luke Williams were all too much for the Gwent visitors.
Tries from Treharne (2), Williams (2), Hamilton and Myhill settled the issue with the minimum of fuss.
The WRW U18 Plate went to Gwyr who ran in seven tries in the 43-10 defeat of Treorchy CS.
A hat-trick of tries from Gareth Kirk was a repeat of his feat against Barry CS in the semi-final and others from David Evans (2), and Ben James (2) took the Gower Welsh language school home in style.
And this without three key men in Sam Crowley, Rhys Williams and Sam Davies who got injured at the pool stage.
In the U15 final Caerleon CS trailed 21-19 to Ystalyfera with time all but up before flying wing Ashton Hewitt scored a very late try to take the trophy back to Gwent.
Hewitt had been outstanding throughout the two days of competition rattling up 16 tries which included five against Barry CS to be the tournament’s top try scorer.
In the final, two tries from Rhys Pugsley and one by Jack Ford kept Caerleon in touch before Hewitt sped away up the left hand touchline for the decisive try.
Two conversions by skipper Alex Gin and one by Angus O’Brien set the seal on an exciting win.
Dafydd Howells, Rhys Morgan and Huw Mitchell got the Ystalyfera tries.
The U13 final was really exciting, the bigger Cowbridge CS side pipped 17-14 in a thrilling end by a hat-trick of tries from Strade’s outstanding play-maker skipper Matthew Pearce.
Neath Port Talbot College were unbeatable in the Girls U18 and showed off their talents in the final where Amman Valley CS were hit by seven tries.
Their two stars were Jessica Smith and Stephanie Williams, who shared all seven tries in the final – four and three respectively – in a fine exhibition of balanced running.
A game Amman Valley got tries from Ffion Rees and Megan Jones but went down 39-14
