They weren’t shouting ‘180!’ at a charity darts match in Pembrokeshire. They were shouting ‘1000!’
For the darts tournament held at the Abergwaun Hotel in Fishguard raised more than £1000 for the Healing The Wounds charity.
In fact, the grand total was £1,044 for the charity which helps treat victims of PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) in Wales.
“It was a magnificent effort and greatly appreciated,” said Alun Richards, the new fund-raising coordinator for Healing The Wounds in West Wales.
“Charitable events such as this darts match provide much-needed funds for the charity as we continue our frontline work in treating PTSD sufferers.
“We treat everyone from acting servicemen and servicewomen to veterans from all conflicts. We have a waiting list of people to treat and the funds raised by events like this help us to keep on top of the growing demand for our treatment services in Wales.”
The charity darts match was organised by the North Pembrokeshire Ladies and Men’s Darts League and the Abergwaun Hotel.
The £1,000 raised was boosted by another £44 raised on the night from the players’ entry money.
The cheque was presented by Pam Starkey (Ladies’ Treasurer), Helen Louise Howard (Chair Ladies’ League), Lukey Lewis ( Chairman of the Men’s League ) and Mike Burns (Treasurer Men’s League). Also in the photo are some of the darts players who took part in the tournament.
The overall winners of the event were Lukey Lewis and his wife Mandy.
Healing The Wounds executive director and founder Kevin Richards said: “We are very grateful to the North Pembrokeshire Darts League for their fund-raising efforts. The cash is a big boost to our work as a charity.
“Our long-term aim is to establish a residential centre for treating victims of PTSD in Wales.
“But, in the meantime, we are busy treating people who have PTSD. We have built up a team of treatment practitioners and regularly hold treatment courses.
“But there is a great need for more courses as we have a waiting list which is growing. As the charity gains recognition, so we are finding that more people are coming forward asking for help.”
Mr Richards said that his colleague Alun Richards was keen to develop a network of fund-raisers and a diary of events in West Wales.
