Swansea-born soprano Elin Manahan Thomas and English baritone Roderick Williams will be joining BBC National Chorus of Wales this January for a magical performance of Fauré’s Requiem.
On Friday 24 January, 7.30pm at Cardiff’s St David’s Hall, BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales, joined by singers from Aelwyd y Waun Ddyfal, perform the timeless piece by French composer Gabriel Fauré – which has become one of the most cherished of choral masterpieces. Intimate and peaceful, the work is full of beautiful and breathtaking melodies.
For this concert the Orchestra and Chorus welcome back their former Principal Conductor Thierry Fischer. A conductor who worked with the Chorus on many occasions, he leads this concert as part of a season of celebration for the Chorus, as they mark their thirtieth anniversary this year.
The concert will also feature both Honegger’s Symphony No 3, and a performance of the showstopper Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini by Rachmaninov. Taking inspiration from “the demon fiddler” Paganini, this work encapsulates many emotions within the theme’s 24 variations – including the lush romantic melody of the well-known 18th variation.
To play this brilliantly virtuosic piece, the Orchestra will welcome to the stage pianist Yevgeny Sudbin – described by the Daily Telegraph as “one of the greatest pianists of the 21stcentury”.
Tickets for this concert, on Friday 24 January, 7.30pm, are £10-£29 (discounts available) and are available through the BBC National Orchestra of Wales Audience Line, by calling 0800 052 1812.
