Welsh success at the Pan Celtic Festival

‘Rhywun yn Rhywle’, the winning song at S4C’s 2011 Cân i Gymru competition, has also been successful at this year’s Pan Celtic Festival.

Composers Ynyr Roberts and Steve Balsamo penned the song which then went on to represent Wales in the annual festival as part of the prize for winning Cân i Gymru. Ynyr’s band Brigyn performed the song in Ireland.

The 2011 Pan Celtic Festival was held in Dingle, Ireland and celebrated its 40th anniversary.

‘Rhywun yn Rhywle’ managed to beat entries made by the other four Celtic nations and regions, including the Isle of Man, Ireland, Scotland and Cornwall.

Ynyr, originally from Penisarwaun near Caernarfon, says: “It was an honour to be given the opportunity to represent Wales in the competition. Winning is an added bonus. In fact, this was the first time for Brigyn to take part in a musical competition and it went down to the wire between the Isle of Man and Wales.

“Dingle is a beautiful town in a great country and the Celtic and folk origins was present during the festival. The number of Welsh fans and the festival’s own followers were also very supportive. I would definitley urge any musicians to compete in next year’s Cân i Gymru competition because the chance to represent Wales doesn’t arise often.”
