Temperatures are dipping and the nights are drawing in but Welsh superstar Cerys Matthews is among the attractions set to light up Swansea’s cultural scene this autumn.
The former Catatonia singer will be among the special guests appearing at the twelfth annual Dylan Thomas Festival from October 26 to November 9.
Author Owen Sheers, songwriter Fflur Dafydd and poet Dannie Abse are some of the other famous names set to appear.
And the festival is just one of several events to whet the appetites of culture vultures over coming weeks and months.
The Crime and Punishment exhibition at Swansea Museum runs until the end of December and includes a rich history of local robbers, thieves, murderers and protestors as well as the chance to find out more about punishments that have been dished out over the years.
Mugshots of some of Swansea’s most infamous criminals are also included in the exhibition.
Additional educational fun includes a new display that’s now up and running at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery that includes the casting of some of the world’s most famous bridges in a new light.
Swansea-based artist Tim Davies has erased all traces of the background in images of bridges across the planet to reveal the appearance of only the structures themselves as part of his Between a Rock and a Hard Place exhibition.
Cllr Graham Thomas, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, said: “We’re very fortunate to have facilities such as Swansea Museum, the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery and The Dylan Thomas Centre right on our doorstep.
“The events and exhibitions they host are educational and entertaining and will offer people plenty of choice when it comes to planning family trips indoors when the winter weather arrives.
“Praise should go to the hardworking and creative staff who continuously develop new ideas to ensure all ages and interests are catered for.”
The Family History Centre at the West Glamorgan Archives in the Civic Centre is also now open on Saturdays to give people extra time to research their family trees. Free access to leading genealogy website www.ancestry.com is available at the facility. There’s also a shop for Christmas cards and gifts with a local flavour.
