Note: In light of the recent flooding we at Welsh Icons are uncertain that this work will be undertaken on the date stated below.
Welsh Water will start essential ground investigation work on the footpath of Monmouth’s Wye Bridge on 6th January 2014. Valuable information will be gathered to establish the route of a new water pipe to help maintain a top quality and reliable supply for the years ahead.
The work will take place over four days and will involve temporary two way lights on the bridge, moving the current traffic light system further back onto the A466. The temporary lights will be manned during busy periods to ensure the least disruption possible to traffic flow. Pedestrian access will be available on one side of the bridge only while essential works are carried out.
Further work will also be necessary in the verge of the A40 trunk road. Welsh Water has liaised closely with Monmouthshire’s highways department and to carry out this work safely and quickly, a lane will be closed on the A40 immediately south of the junction with the Wye Bridge. The work will be done through the night to keep disruption to traffic as to a minimum, taking place from 8pm on 13th January to 6am the following day.
Welsh Water’s Delivery Manager, Roy Samuel said: “We have agreed with Monmouthshire’s Highways Department to use temporary two way lights to control the flow of traffic while we carry out this work. We know that our work can cause disruption and we would like to thank everyone in advance for their patience during these essential investigations.
“We hope to start the main scheme to replace the water main in April and it will take around six months to complete. We will liaise with residents and businesses when we are planning the main section of work. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone affected by these works for bearing with us while we carry out this essential scheme in their community. There will be no disruption to water or waste water services while we carry out this work.”
Highways Network Manager for Monmouthshire County Council, Mike Jones added: “We have been working in partnership with Welsh Water and SWTRA (South Wales Trunk Road Agency) to co-ordinate these works to cause as little disruption as possible”.
