Shy school cleaner Lucy dreams of a brighter, more glamorous future – but will her nerves get the better of her before the big night?
Lucy is just one of the candidates to be Miss Merthyr Tydfil, the last in the Planet Wales series (Monday, March 29, BBC One Wales) which goes behind the scenes to follow four of the contestants vying for this year’s title.
Children’s nurse Kayleigh already believes she has the best job in the world on the children’s ward in Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr. Schoolgirls Marilyn-Monroe-lookalike Alex and aspiring legal and political student Michelle are both in their final year at different schools in the Merthyr area.
These are just some of the girls competing against each other and another 14 candidates to be Miss Merthyr Tydfil 2010.
The programme takes a look at how these hard-working, ambitious young women compare to the women who took part in the very first Miss Merthyr competition back in 1960. And as the big night approaches, past winners, now in their sixties and seventies, reflect on the changes and the similarities both with the competition and the town of Merthyr in their day.
With heels to practise in, spray tans to arrange, dresses and hair extensions to buy, this is a window into a world of glamour and beauty. But there can only be one Miss Merthyr Tydfil.
