The two day event is run by Sport.Cardiff and Disability Sport Wales, and offers children, young people and adults the opportunity to take part in 22 different sports, all under one roof at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff’s National Indoor Athletics Centre (NIAC).
Cardiff Devils Ice Hockey and Cardiff City Football Club will also be proving support at the event.
Several local Paralympians will be in attendance along with Channel Four Paralympic programme presenter Liam Holt, who will be providing a master class in wheelchair basketball.
The popular event is free and takes place on Friday, June 17 and Saturday, June 18 from 10am to 4pm.
Each day various sports will be showcased, all run by club coaches. They include badminton, table tennis, archery, wheelchair basketball, golf, handycycling and powerchair football and for the first time petanque will also be on offer.
It is primarily aimed at physically disabled adults and children but everyone is welcome to attend. Designed to spot those who might have a burgeoning talent or those who simply want to take part in sport and have fun – there are sports to suit everyone of all ages and ability levels.
As well as having the opportunity to try the sports, attendees can also find out about local club sports.
For the fourth year the event is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Cardiff Bay who is delighted to be supporting this venture. Additional support has also been given by Cardiff University, University of Wales Institute Cardiff (UWIC), Invacare and Design Circle.
Run by Disability Sport Wales and Sport.Cardiff, the event aims to get disabled people more active in sport and will see around 450 participants from across the South Wales region and beyond taking part. Members of the community, school and day centre groups are expected to take part.
Executive member for Sport, Leisure & Culture, Cllr Nigel Howells, said: “It is fantastic that this event grows from strength to strength every year with participation increasing across the city.
“The Disability Sport Wales and Sport.Cardiff do a great job of organising the event which helps to make wheelchair sports more accessible to everyone.
“Cardiff will be hosting Paralympic training camps for teams from South Africa, New Zealand and Australia and they will reap the benefits of our sporting capital when they visit next year to train in the build up for 2012.”
Jo Coates – McGrath, Sport Cardiff’s Disability Sports Development Officer, said: “The event promises to create a hive of activity and we are keen to get the message across that wheelchair sport is not just for wheelchair users and is open to anyone who would use a wheelchair for sport. Some disability sports clubs in the area even have non-disabled members who are fully included in the club activities.”
All are welcome. Groups can book on for either day and anyone who wants to turn up and have a go at wheelchair sport is encouraged to do so! Spectators are also welcome to attend – entry is free.
