Food tourism is now clearly on the Welsh national agenda, with many visitors to Wales expecting food products and dishes to be an expression of local culture. With the support of the Welsh Assembly Government, there are currently over 1,000 organic producers representing over 8% of the Welsh land area, many having a direct relationship with the public by offering organic produce from farm shops, cafes or farmers’ markets or by inviting the public to visit their farms.
The third edition of ‘Where to Buy Local Organic Food’, available from Organic Centre Wales is now available. The guide lists over 120 producers throughout Wales who sell direct to the public. There are suppliers of a wide range of produce, including Welsh Black and other meats, cheese and other dairy products and a number of vegetable and soft fruit producers.
Although against a background of economic recession, it is interesting to note that sales of organic food still increased by 1.7% over the last calendar year, and recent publication of the Soil Association Market Report shows that there is a core of organic consumers who will not ditch their commitment to organic products. Price comparisons have shown that organic fruit and vegetables are consistently cheaper through box schemes or direct from the producers, rather than the supermarket.
There is no doubt that buying organic and local produce puts money into the hands of the local economies. It also means a reduction of food miles, pollution and support for farmers who ensure that wildlife flourishes on their farms.
More and more visitors to Wales want to know more about the food they are buying and eating. Whether self-catering, bed and breakfast or cafes and restaurants, organic and local ticks all the boxes!
