William Powell AM, Welsh Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for the Environment and Sustainable Development, has called on local authorities to fully engage with the Welsh Government’s recently announced ‘Road Verges for Wildflowers’ initiative to improve rural habitats for pollinators.
William Powell AM, Mid and West Wales, said:
“I have previously called on the Welsh Government to give more focus to road verge environments in their attempts to improve rural habits for threatened pollinators.
“As such I am pleased to see that the Welsh Government has commissioned the ‘Road Verges for Wildflowers’ initiative, in order to recognise the importance of roadside verges for wildflowers, pollinators and other wildlife. In these stringent fiscal times, it also allows public authorities to make significant savings in their grass cutting regime, as long as driver and pedestrian safety is not compromised.”
Jane Dodds, Welsh Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Montgomeryshire, added:
“We need to make sure we maintain our beautiful Montgomeryshire road verges, and wild flowers are important to the countryside. We particularly want more Welsh Daffodils there!”
