Shadow Rural Affairs Minister Brynle Williams AM has hit out at the culture of box-ticking bureaucracy that has hurt the competitiveness of Welsh agriculture.
Speaking from the Royal Welsh Show, Brynle said:
“Welsh farmers urgently need to be set free from the reams of red tape that distract them from their vital job of producing food and managing the countryside.
“For more than a decade, Governments in Cardiff and Westminster have been only too happy to gold-plate regulation after regulation without considering the practical implications for Wales.
“The result has been a constant stream of impractical EU regulations like electronic sheep ID and nitrate vulnerable zones that pile on the costs for the industry while delivering little or no practical benefit to farmers or the public.
“I welcome the fact that Wales now has Ministers ready to fight their corner in Brussels.
“There needs to be a change right at the heart of the Assembly Government, away from a culture of box-ticking bureaucracy to one that delivers the best outcomes on the ground.”
