Williams: Legacy of polio still with us

Speaking ahead of his short debate today entitled ‘Post Polio Syndrome: The legacy of a forgotten disease’, Shadow Rural Affairs Minister Brynle Williams AM said:

“In Wales and Britain, many people think of Polio as a historical disease, or one that only affects people thousands of miles away, in India or Nigeria.

“But this is not the case – the legacy of Polio is still with us.

“There are hundreds of people in Wales that survived Polio with varying degrees of disability and need ongoing care and specialist support.

“This is something that the health service has struggled to deliver, as experienced professionals have retired and passed away.

“There are a number of ways that the situation can be turned around with relatively little effort or cost to the NHS.

“I want to use my debate today to urge the Health Minister and her officials to commit fully to giving people with Post-Polio Syndrome in Wales the care and support they deserve.“
