Welsh Liberal Democrat candidate for Ceredigion Mark Williams has today launched his manifesto for students in Ceredigion.
The Liberal Democrats have proposed a six-year plan to phase out tuition fees – the only party pledged to scrap the unpopular charges.
The plan will start by scrapping fees for final year students, until year 6 when all fees for full-time and part-time students taking their first degree would be scrapped.
The Liberal Democrats have today highlighted that predictions of Labour and the Conservatives raising fees to £7,000, would leave some students facing debts of up to £44,000.
The manifesto also details how the Liberal Democrats would make the tax system fairer, helping graduates in their first jobs, create more jobs through a green economy stimulus, and work towards more Welsh language provision.
Commenting, Mark Williams said:
“It is extremely important that we engage with the many students that come to Ceredigion, and I hope they will take a look at this manifesto.
“Students have been let down by Labour and the Conservatives’ support for fees, and with speculation that they will increase fees to £7,000, some students could be saddled with £44,000 of debt.
“It is even worse that in Wales, Plaid Cymru has let students down by allowing Labour to replace the universal grant with a means-tested grant.
“Our plans to raise the personal allowance to £10,000 and to increase the supply of homes by encouraging the use of more empty homes is also great news for students leaving university and getting on the employment ladder.
“Only the Liberal Democrats are promising to scrap fees, and we are offering the best deal for students by concentrating on making things fairer.”
