Despite claims by the Health Minister that cancer waiting time targets would be met in October, figures released today have shown that the targets have once again been missed.
The target is for 95% of urgent patients to be seen by a specialist within 62 days, but figures released today show that only 88.6% of people were seen in this time.
Kirsty Williams, leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, said:
“Again the Welsh Labour Government has failed to deliver on its promise.
“Cancer waiting time targets have not been met since 2008. Anyone could see that it was highly unlikely that these targets would be met by October, which begs the question why the Health Minister was the only one naïve enough to think otherwise.
“Being diagnosed with cancer is a terrifying experience. It is appalling that people are being forced to wait over two months until the start of their treatment.
“NHS staff are working incredibly hard and doing the best they can, but sadly this Welsh Labour Government has completely mismanaged our NHS and patients are suffering because of it.”
