The Barry Neighbourhood Policing Team recently announced the winners of the 2014 Barry Island Alcohol Prevention Poster.
The contest is in its 4th year and the Barry Police team received entries from children, aged up to 16 years, to this worthwhile message campaign to increase awareness of the use of alcohol, and to decrease its use within the Barry Island resort during the summer months.
This year’s winning design belonged to Year 5 pupil, Georgia Jones from Cadoxton Primary School. Georgia’s poster will be on display across the resort throughout the summer months. Runners up were Charlie Jones also from Cadoxton Primary School and Eiddan Ballard from Barry Island Primary School.
Under the rules of the Designated Public Place Order, people in the Vale of Glamorgan seaside town can drink in restaurants and pubs but not on the beach or streets. As a result, the order gives Police Officers and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) powers to confiscate and dispose of alcohol being consumed on the Island.
PCSO Owain Reynolds said: “Barry Island is a very popular summer resort and we will be working with our partners and local businesses to ensure a safe and enjoyable time is had by all”.
Inspector Chris Owen added: “Barry Island is a family oriented resort and we welcome anyone who comes here to enjoy themselves in a reasonable and law abiding manner. However if our team find anyone carrying alcohol on them, or consuming it on the beach or on the streets, it will be confiscated”.
