With snow across Cardiff, Flat Holm Island has not escaped a dusting. As pictures taken by Flat Holm Warden Matthew Lipton show, Flat Holm has been turned into a Winter Wonderland.
Despite the cold conditions Matthew and his team are still working hard on the island and are keeping warm thanks to the 18th Century farmhouse.
Matthew, said, “Work carries on as normal for myself and the team on Flat Holm. It’s the first time I have experienced snow on the island and for one of our volunteers from Australia it’s the first time she has seen snow.
“My only wish is that it could have snowed on the island during Christmas, when for the first time we had 10 guests staying. The weather did cause us a few problems, with all of us having to stay an extra day due to the bad weather conditions over Christmas, however the guests didn’t mind at all as they got to enjoy an extra night on the island!”
The first Christmas Break on Flat Holm was a big success with guests and staff all enjoying the unique holiday experience.
Matthew adds: “The Christmas break was fantastic and we all had a brilliant time, the feedback we received from guests was amazing and as a result, two of the visitors have become members of our charity, The Flat Holm Society.”
Heidi Sprake a guest on the island at Christmas commented: “I had the most fantastic time on the island and it truly has been a Christmas to remember.
There were many, many chances to laugh and enjoy, but also times to be quiet and peaceful which resulted in a real sense of freedom.
“From the opportunity to meet a diverse group of people and to learn all about the island to the visit from Santa and pool tournament, the whole experience was perfectly balanced.
Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, Cllr Nigel Howells, said: “I am glad to hear weather isn’t causing too much of a problem for Matthew and his team on Flat Holm. The pictures taken by Matthew show a perfect winter setting.”
The island will re-open to visitors from March onwards when day trips, overnight trips, special courses and events will be arranged. For details please visit www.flatholmisland.com or call 02920 877912
