The leader of the WLGA, Councillor Bob Wellington, has been recognised alongside figures from across sport, entertainment and public service with the award of a CBE as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.
Cllr Wellington has served on Torfaen council representing the Greenmeadow ward for 33 years, and has led the council for a decade.
His key achievements include the central role he played in Blaenavon’s rejuvenation and its achievement of UNESCO World Heritage status, and also his contribution to the development of Cwmbran’s Greenmeadow Community Farm.
Looking towards the future, Councillor Wellington is actively engaged in shaping the strategic development of the next round of European Programmes in Wales as part of an expert advisory group.
Commenting on the award, Cllr Ali Thomas OBE (Neath Port Talbot), Deputy WLGA Leader said:
“Both professionally and personally, I congratulate Bob on this well-deserved award. In all his 33 years as a local councillor and over a decade spent as Torfaen’s Council Leader, Bob has never stepped back from the significant challenges associated with trying to achieve the best possible outcomes for the local communities that he represents.
“As Leader of the WLGA, Bob has worked tirelessly at a time when local councils and local public services are being placed under a significant amount of pressure. His energy, commitment and indeed his successes on behalf of local government have drawn respect from all tiers of local government in Wales and the wider public sector.
“This is a thoroughly deserved award, and as local government enters the most difficult financial period in its history, I am sure Bob will continue to do all in his power to ensure that local public services are protected as much as possible for communities in Wales.”
