A free workshop which aims to encourage businesses to adopt a ‘Lean’ IT approach will be held from 5.15pm until 7pm on Thursday, November 18, at the University of Glamorgan’s Treforest Campus.
Hosted by Software Alliance Wales – the recently-launched £13million pan-Wales project led by Swansea University – the workshop titled ‘Lean Computing for SMEs’ will be delivered by Paul Hilder, Managing Director of The Open Source Software Company in Cwmbran.
Mr Hilder is an expert in the ‘Lean’ business philosophy, who advises businesses on the benefits of adopting the principles and how to fully capitalise on its benefits by integrating complimentary IT processes.
The event will provide delegates with an informed insight into the principles of ‘Lean’, and how when combined with IT practices such as virtualisation, it can have a significant impact on the productivity and profit of a business.
Speaking ahead of the event, Professor Andrew Ware, Head of the Department of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Glamorgan, said: “Lean thinking is a business philosophy that emanated in Japan and has been used by many large companies to become the leaders within their field.
“Businesses can see real results from using the Lean approach, with significant benefits when complimentary IT measures and processes are implemented in the process.
“This workshop will provide delegates with an understanding of the key processes involved with lean thinking and the simple IT measures that can be taken to enhance a business.”
Dr Neal Harman, Project Director of Software Alliance Wales and Lecturer at Swansea University’s School of Physical Sciences, added: “This workshop is part of a programme of events by Software Alliance Wales, which aim to offer support to ICT businesses and professionals working in the industry in Wales to ensure they keep abreast of the rapid pace of technological developments.”
The Software Alliance Wales project, which is led by Swansea University in collaboration with the University of Glamorgan, Bangor University, Aberystwyth University and University of Wales, Trinity Saint David, comprises four specific strands identified to support businesses in Wales.
Business ICT Workshops is one of those strands, and the project has established a series of workshops in the coming months, aimed at engaging and supporting businesses across Wales’s convergence areas.
The project has also created a recognised ICT Continuous Professional Development programme, for professionals to acquire new skills in the latest emerging technologies.
It will also help businesses gain Accredit UK certification – a quality benchmark recognised throughout the UK.
The certification is designed to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of companies in the ICT Sector, as well as offering students the opportunity to undertake collaborative ICT based development projects within SMEs, to improve their learning while providing knowledge and expertise for the businesses involved.
