Wrexham Assembly Member Lesley Griffiths has praised the Welsh Government’s fast fibre broadband initiative as it reached a major milestone.
Thanks to the Superfast Cymru programme, over 100,000 homes and businesses in Wales are now able to access high-speed fibre broadband.
The Superfast Cymru programme is a partnership between the Welsh Government and BT. When combined with previous commercial rollouts from BT Openreach and other providers, the Welsh Government’s aim is to provide 96% of Wales with a world class fibre broadband network by 2016.
The Welsh Government believe the programme will change the way Wales uses the internet and will have major economic benefits for Welsh businesses.
Providing a faster, more reliable service can make a huge difference to businesses’ profit and productivity. By 2016, the majority of businesses and homes in Wales will be able to access broadband speeds in excess of 30Mbps, with some areas able to access speeds of over 100Mbps.
Many areas of Wrexham are already fibre enabled and were upgraded under BT’s commercial rollout. In the coming months under the Superfast Cymru programme, these exchanges will undergo some additional fibre deployment and look set to benefit many communities across the region. The programme is also set to commence working in areas yet to be fibre enabled in the autumn.
Local Assembly Member Lesley Griffiths said:
“The Superfast Cymru programme continues to make excellent progress and is well on the way to meeting the Welsh Government’s 2016 target.”
“Under the Welsh Labour Government, superfast broadband will be delivered sooner and to a higher proportion of properties in Wales than in England, Scotland or Northern Ireland.”
“The Superfast Cymru website has further information about the programme. There is also an interactive coverage map to check availability and planned future coverage.”
