A new £10 million fund to support community projects aimed at tackling poverty has been backed by Wrexham Assembly Member Lesley Griffiths.
The Welsh Government believes the Communities Facilities Programme will provide the extra capital investment that can make a major difference to communities across Wales.
Voluntary and community groups are being urged to bid for capital grants of up to £500,000. These grants will aim to improve public facilities which provide services for people most in need in their local areas.
Schemes that will reintroduce or prevent the loss of community services are eligible to apply, along with other projects that clearly prevent or help alleviate the effects of poverty.
The Communities Facilities Programme will open for business on 3 February 2014 and will distribute £10m across Wales by the end of 2015.
Lesley Griffiths, Assembly Member for Wrexham said:
“The Communities Facilities Programme can make a significant difference to people’s lives by providing greater opportunities and tackling the causes of poverty.”
“Community led projects will aim to help people live healthier lives and encourage individuals to learn new skills to boost their job prospects.”
“Despite the UK Government continuing to squeeze the Welsh Government budget, this latest approach aims to help some of the most vulnerable people across Wales and demonstrates how the Welsh Government remains committed to reducing poverty and strengthening local communities.”
