An award-winning Wrexham butcher is among the first to be featured on a new website dedicated to promoting top-notch local food.
Robert Platt, who has a stall in the Butcher’s Market, is one of many businesses being showcased on the recently launched Local Food First site www.localfoodfirstwrexham.co.uk
The site is part of a dynamic new campaign to promote local produce, and features high quality butchers like Robert, farm-based ice-cream makers, trout fisheries, farm shops, chocolate-makers, real ale breweries and many other producers.
Robert is one of many businesses eligible for inclusion on the website because the goods he sells have either been reared at his own farm, or sourced from other farmers in the borough. So in other words, it’s truly local food.
The aim of the Local Food First campaign is to support producers like Robert by encouraging consumers and businesses to source food locally whenever they can.
Robert, who regularly wins awards for his burgers and sausages, said: “It’s great to be among the first producers to be featured on the website, and anything that raises the profile of local food has got to be good news.
“Local producers like me know exactly where our food has come from and how it was reared, and that means our customers can be assured their purchases are fresh and full of flavour.
“People who buy local produce can also feel proud that they’re doing their bit for the environment by reducing food miles. In other words, they know the products have only travelled a few miles down the road, keeping transport-fuelled CO2 emissions to a minimum.”
The Butchers’ Market is one of Wrexham’s oldest indoor markets and opens Monday to Saturday (half-day on Wednesdays).
The Local Food First project is being overseen by rural development agency Northern Marches Cymru (NMC), which is supported by Wrexham Council’s Economic Development Department.
The project has received funding through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013, which is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Union.
