As the starting gun fires on Sport Wales’ drive to celebrate and recognise the impact of coaches and volunteers of sport in Wales, Wrexham County Borough Council is throwing its weight behind it in the hope that the local community will feel inspired to get involved.
From gold medal-winning Olympians and Paralympians to Welsh rugby and football stars; ‘Behind Every Star’ has recruited eleven of Wales’ sporting heroes of the moment to highlight the pivotal role that the people on the sidelines play.
Whether on the sidelines of a Saturday morning five-a-side match or an FA cup final, Behind Every Star is celebrating and recognising the hard work and dedication that is put into sport in Wales by coaches and volunteers all across the country.
The ‘Behind Every Star’ campaign will last for several months and includes a photo exhibition of top Welsh sportspeople with one of their current or former coaches.
The exhibition will travel the country from May to October and will be in Eagles Meadow, Wrexham 24th to 25th September. The exhibition includes stars such as local Olympic gold medal winning rower Tom James, British Lion Jamie Roberts, Paralympic swimmer Liz Johnson and World Champion triathlete Helen Jenkins.
Councillor Bob Dutton Lead Member for Communities and Performance at Wrexham Council said:
“We are backing the Sport Wales campaign as the council is dedicated to recognising the incredible work of athletes coaches and volunteers. I encourage all local clubs, team and individuals who contribute to sporting achievements and clubs in the area to get involved and have the opportunity to truly celebrate your successes.’
Wrexham Council actively appreciates and values the contributions made by people who give up their time to support sport in the county borough and are holding their annual Sports Awards in November. The event highlights and values the excellent work of local people in local communities in and around Wrexham and recognises and honors the achievements of athletes, coaches and volunteers looking to achieve sporting excellence in Wrexham.
Chair of Sport Wales, Professor Laura McAllister, said:
“The support we’ve had for the campaign from local authorities, governing bodies, groups and individuals has been particularly impressive. It just goes to show the importance of coaches and volunteers to sport in Wales if we are to continue our proud sporting tradition and get even more children hooked and participating regularly.”
