Big hearted bakers have risen to the challenge of making money for a cancer charity.
Staff at the Village Bakery at their sites on Wrexham Industrial Estate and in Minera organised a cake bake off in aid of Macmillan.
The event was organised by Supply Chain & Logistics Co-ordinator Kath Ashcroft, 39, and raised £286.
She explained: “Cancer is something that could affect us all one day whether it be us or someone in the family, so it’s a really good cause.
“Everyone’s been busy baking or brought a cake in – we have more home-made than brought in cakes which was really good.
“The standard was really very good and the judges were most impressed.
“The judges were just as bit as tough as Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, they took it very seriously and wanted quiet while they deliberated and cogitated.
“They winning cake was absolutely delicious and has been sold. It was a chocolate fudge cake made by Steve Gill, who’s a Shift Manager.
“In fact, it was so nice that he’s promised to make another one for the staff next week.
Among the judges was Daryl Stephenson 36, who was recently named as Bakery Apprentice of the Year by Coleg Cambria.
Daryl, who now works in the new test kitchen and recently met the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall when they officially opened the new £4 million Baking Academy and Innovation Centre, reckoned the cakes were fit for royalty.
He said: “It was excellent. Some real effort and skill went into making these cakes. It’s good to see people pulling out the stops for a really good charity.
“It can affect so many people. My family has been affected by cancer. My grandparents have had it and it took them from unfortunately so it’s a charity that’s quite close to my heart.
“My personal favourite was a beautiful chocolate cake but they were all very nice. People had different ideas and there were some unusual flavours.”
Managing director Robin Jones was also impressed by their efforts.
He said: “Although we don’t actually make cakes at the Village Bakery, we do have some extremely talented bakers so I am not surprised the standard was so high.
“And what’s more they have raised a tasty amount for a very deserving cause.”
