Schoolchildren from Victoria Primary School, Wrexham and Pontfadog County Primary School, Clwyd South were able to debate a motion and take part in a vote at the Senedd, last Wednesday.
Following a visit to Victoria Primary School last week, Wrexham Assembly Member, Lesley Griffiths joined the children for a tour of the Senedd – where they took part in an important debate of their own.
Lesley joined Victoria School teacher Jane Williams, Pontfadog deputy head Elaine Hughes and 30 of their pupils on a tour of the Senedd building, public gallery, and the Chamber in Cardiff bay. The pupils learned of what the Welsh Assembly and the Welsh Government do, what devolution means for Wales, and all about the Senedd and Pierhead buildings.
However, pupils also took part in debate, followed by a vote of their own – on school food.
In the Welsh Assembly Ty Hywel building, Pupils got the chance for a debate, and to vote electronically on the motion that unhealthy school lunchtime snacks should be banned.
Following some deadlock, a compromise position was eventually reached where pupils agreed it was a good idea to ban unhealthy food for just the Friday of each week.
Following the visit – Lesley Griffiths said;
“The children were delightful; it is always enjoyable to show young faces around the seat of Government in Wales.
“It is important that children and young people are encouraged to learn about and engage in democracy, and the children clearly enjoyed their opportunity to hold a debate and vote of their own at the Assembly.”
“I would like to thank Victoria School head, John Hughes for helping to arrange the trip, it made for an enjoyable day for Teachers, Pupils and Politicians alike.”
