WRU Girls programme

The Welsh Rugby Union has announced the 2009-10 schools rugby programme for girls for a WRU Schools Tag Tournament and a WRU Schools 10s Tournament where there will be modified contact.

In the WRU Schools Tag Tournament teams will compete within their unitary authority with the winners participating in the National finals to be held in Cardiff, scheduled to take place on Tuesday 1st December 2009.

This competition will run at Under 14s (years 7, 8 and 9) and Under 18s (years 10, 11, 12 and 13).

In the WRU Schools 10s Tournament teams will be playing 10-a-side contact rugby but with uncontested scrums and without lifting in the lineout. (More detailed rules will be sent to entrants.) Interschool matches or Unitary Authority tournaments will be organised with the winners in each UA attending the finals mid to late April (TBC). The exact format will depend on numbers of entrants.

This competition will run at Under 14s (years 7, 8, and 9), Under 16s (years 9, 10 & 11) and Under 18s (years 12 and 13 and FE colleges). Note that players in year 9 can play in either the Under 14s or Under 16s depending on ability but not both.

By entering these tournaments schools will benefit significantly. All tag teams will receive balls and tag belts (for those who have not previously participated), a rules booklet. Attendance on a Tag Rugby course for one member of staff is also offered while Tag finalists receive a set of playing T shirts.

In the 10s teams will receive six hours of introductory coaching from a WRU Development Officer or Community Coach (fully trained and CRB checked), rugby balls and support from your local women’s or girls rugby team.
