Sprinter Darren Campbell helped Pontypridd YMCA’s new gym take off when he officially opened the facility.
Tones Fitness Suite is based in a refurbished room at the YMCA building in Taff Street. It offers a range of cardiovascular and resistance gym equipment, with supervision from a gym instructor.
Olympic gold medal-winning athlete Campbell was joined by Rhondda Cynon Taf’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, Cllr Robert Bevan and Pontypridd’s Town Mayor Gwen Williams for the launch.
Cllr Bevan said: “It was a pleasure to meet Darren and celebrate the gym opening We are delighted to have been able to work in partnership with the YMCA and Sport Wales to help set up the new facility.”
Branwen Dickson from Sport Wales said: “Sport Wales supported the refurbishment of the gym and changing rooms with an investment of £30,000 and it’s great to now see the results of that investment.
“The gym has a friendly atmosphere and the membership is continuing to grow. We want to see more projects like this, where we work with local authorities in Wales and the voluntary sector to provide much-needed opportunities for communities, on their doorstep.”
YMCA general manager Hayley Fidler said: “The gym opened to the public in the summer and local residents and people who work in Pontypridd are enjoying using our great new facilities in the heart of town.”
The gym is the product of partnership working between Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, the YMCA and Sport Wales. Staff from the Council’s Leisure Services department helped select gym equipment and train staff. The YMCA is providing the overall management, while Sport Wales awarded a grant to pay for the conversion of the area to get it started.
The gym is open Monday-Thurs from 7.30am-9pm, Fridays from 7.30am-7pm and Saturdays from 9am-1pm.
