Well, shiver me timbers! Western Leisure Centre is set to host its second free community fun day this summer.
Following the success of last year’s event which attracted over 800 visitors, organisers will host the Treasure Island themed day on Thursday 4, August from 10am until 3pm.
So prepare to walk-the-plank into what will be a fun-filled day full of action packed activities for all ages.
The programme caters for everyone and includes water aerobics and step aerobics for the over fifties and adult fitness sessions such as Zumba, Fitball and Spin.
For the youngsters there are five-a-side football, street dance, trampolining, giant inflatable, skate ramps and arts and crafts. There will also be a tiger inflatable, soft play and story time for the under fives.
In true pirate fashion visitors should prepare to get wet as pool activities include snorkel and mask, walk-the-plank, pirate inflatable and floats in the blue lagoon pool.
There will also be fun activities and displays from various community groups including Communities First, the Jasmine Enterprise Centre, Connect to Cardiff, South Wales Police and South Wales Fire Service, the GP Exercise Referral Team, The Diabetic Society and Cardiff Council Libraries.
The event aims to welcome people from the local community as well as across Cardiff and encourage them to visit the centre and enjoy what the facility has to offer, absolutely free of charge.
Western Leisure Centre is in the heart of the community and offers fantastic opportunities to get active and healthy through fitness and sport as well being a place for social interaction.
It is a top class facility offering a wide range of activities for all different levels of fitness. There is a fully equipped gymnasium, three different size swimming pools, several indoor courts for football & racquet sports, an outdoor multi use games area and a cafeteria.
The day will also promote the Max Card. The leisure discount card from Cardiff Council was well received at last year’s event as many people were still not aware of the discounts they are entitled to.
Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, Cllr Nigel Howells, said: “Last years community event was a huge success so I am pleased the Centre is offering another special free programme of events so that even more people can be inspired to take up a healthy and active lifestyle.
“The centre has benefitted from a modern refurbishment as part of the Council’s commitment to providing first-class leisure and sports facilities, key to the local community.”
The Max Card is available to Cardiff residents who are receiving one of a range of benefits or those aged between 16 – 18 years old and in full time education.
The annual card offers discounts off varied leisure activities, up to 50 per cent at Council owned facilities and up to 30 per cent at a number of private partners.
Some of the facilities you can use the card include leisure centres and pools, community halls as well as other partners such as St David’s Hall, Cardiff Castle, Cineworld and Techniquest as well as many more.
