The Cardiff Story’s youth advisory panel, the ‘Diff Consultants have opened their very own City Showcase exhibition.
Formed in April 2013 the group are made up of ten young people aged between 11 and19 years. The team are from different parts of the city and have different interests and backgrounds. Each member applied to become a ‘Diff Consultant back in March of this year and nine months down the line they have created their exhibition exploring the history of leisure in the city.
The group decided to explore leisure because of their own personal interests. Rose Hellyar,19 a member of the ‘Diff Consultants explained: “We were inspired to explore how people’s interests have evolved over the years in Cardiff because of our own personal interests in sport, music, art and media. Being a part of the ‘Diff Consultants we’ve learnt that Cardiff has a vast, colourful history and has been home to many leisure activities. All of us take part in unique activities in our day to day life, and this is reflected in some of the objects we have chosen to explore. “
In putting together the exhibition the group worked with a film maker to create a film exploring leisure in the capital which sees members interviewing different people in the city to find out more about sport, music, art and media. Two of the interviewees were Spillers Manager Ashli Todd and Dave Haller MBE, Head Coach at City of Cardiff Swimming Club. The group also had the opportunity to work with an illustrator to create a unique map of Cardiff where people can plot what they get up to in the city.
Cabinet Member fro Sport, Leisure and Culture, Cllr Ramesh Patel, said: “The Cardiff Story has always had the ethos that it is a museum for the people of Cardiff created by the people of Cardiff. Over the last few years many community groups, organisations and members of the public have contributed to the success of the museum. The team wanted to extend this and work with young people to create an exhibition targeted to young people, especially teenagers in the city.
“The ‘Diff Consultant group has been a great source of inspiration for the museum’s team. In preparing the exhibition the group have learnt many skills in conducting Oral Histories, research and planning an exhibition. I am looking forward to coming down and seeing the exhibition at the museum.”
The ‘Diff Consultants exhibition will open on the 1st December and will run until the end of February.
