Young people have been rewarded for their outstanding work and dedication to become the sports leaders of the future.
Following five weeks of intensive training nine young men from Rhondda Cynon Taf were recognised in a special award ceremony as part of the pioneering Get Into Sports Leadership.
The project, which was a joint partnership between Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Services for Young People team and the Prince’s Trust scheme, helped the group to gain a host of new qualifications which will help them secure employment in today’s highly competitive job market.
The sessions aimed to provide easier access for young people to gain vital qualifications, in a bid by the Council to lower unemployment amongst 18 to 25 year olds.
The initiative offered eight various subjects to gain qualifications in, which included a Level 2 NVQ in Sports Leadership. They were also successful in First Aid, Climbing, Archery and Navigation schemes.
Four out of the nine participants have now gained employment and the Council is confident that the majority of the participants, if not all, will gain employment in the near future.
Cllr Eudine Hanagan, Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning said: “The amount of drive and enthusiasm the young people in Rhondda Cynon Taf show never ceases to amaze me. The fact that attendance rates for the scheme were over 97% shows the immense levels of commitment that the youth of today are capable of and I wish them luck in the future.
“I would also like to thank all of our partners for making this scheme possible. The opportunities available to young people in Rhondda Cynon Taf are testimony to the Council’s commitment to ensuring all young people are given the chance to reach their full potential in whichever path they decide to follow.”
Kim Aujla, from the Prince’s Trust – Cymru, added: “This is one of the best, if not the best, courses of this kind we have ever undertaken and our partners in Rhondda Cynon Taf have thrown themselves into providing the maximum opportunities and support for these young men to succeed. We are very pleased with the support we have received and look forward to future partnership working with the Council.”
