All Gwynedd children will have an opportunity to earn a gold medal for reading this summer.
The Summer Reading Challenge is the UK’s biggest reading event for children in libraries, and this year’s competition will have a distinct Olympic flavour.
The challenge for the children will be to visit their library four times and read at least four books during the summer holidays – and every child who does this will get a gold medal for his or her achievement. There will also be bronze, silver and gold stickers to collect during the challenge to encourage the children. The competition is mainly aimed at children from 4 to 12 years old.
Councillor Ioan Thomas, the Cabinet Member with responsibility for Gwynedd’s libraries, said:
“It’s vital we nurture a passion for reading from an early age in order to help the children master one of life’s key basic skills. The success of this event over the years shows how much pleasure Gwynedd children get from reading, and our libraries play a key role in supporting this.”
Nia Gruffydd, Service User Manager for Gwynedd Library Service, said:
“The project is a fantastic way of getting our children to read and I would encourage everybody to call by their local library this summer and take advantage of what is available.”
The Story Lab interactive website (www.story-lab.org.uk) provides and opportunity for children to discuss their favourite books and reading experiences with prominent authors and illustrators.
The Reading Challenge is only part of the free Summer of Fun for Children activities held in Gwynedd libraries, which range from drama workshops, arts and crafts sessions, balloon-making and magic shows.
