Ysgol Llanbedr Dyffryn Clwyd – Update from Scrutiny Committee

denbighshireMembers of Denbighshire’s  Communities Scrutiny Committee today discussed the Cabinet’s decision to publish a statutory notice to close Ysgol Llanbedr Dyffryn Clwyd.

A Notice was submitted earlier this week, calling for the decision to be discussed by the Council’s Communities Scrutiny Committee today (Thursday).  The Notice was issued by objectors, based on the view that the Council had failed to consult and pre-judgement of decision to close the school.

Following a lengthy debate, Scrutiny Committee  decided that the correct process was followed, that consultation had been carried out properly and that the decision to close the school was not pre-judged.  The matter will not be referred back to the Cabinet.

The Council would like to emphasise that the decision to issue a statutory notice of proposed closure was taken by the Cabinet last week. Scrutiny’s role today was to discuss whether the process followed was correct.

A statutory notice will be published in due course and information will be issued on how people can respond to the objection period.  Following this objection period the Cabinet will then be required to determine whether to proceed with the implementation of the proposal. This will include considering any objections received during this period.

This decision may be referred to the Welsh Government by a range of bodies which include the Church in Wales Diocesan Authority and the Governing Body of Ysgol Llanbedr.  This would mean that the final decision on the proposal would be made by the Welsh Government rather than Denbighshire.
