Bedwas retain District Cup

Bedwas retained the Newport & District Cup with an emphatic 36-3 win at Rodney Parade over a Risca side that had only lost once this season in October.

After 10 minutes of Risca pressure, Bedwas went to the other end for flanker Johnny Armitage to elude several tacklers and score with centre Kevin McCole converting.

Risca came back with former Cross Keys fly half Chad Bushell, operating at full back, and running superbly while teenage flanker Danny Williams almost got over the line.

It led to a penalty by fly half Matt Manuell, but Bedwas then took charge up front, providing a great platform for fly half Matthew Minty to operate from.

Before the interval wing Mike Stenner scored from a clever Ben Hughes pass and Minty sent McCole over and he converted.

The second half was one-way traffic for 25 minutes as Minty raced clear, followed by flanker Chris Bilton and Stenner again. McCole goaled the last two.

Risca came back with strong attacks, but could not break the Bedwas defence and the man of match was adjudged to be Bedwas hooker Rhys Hutcherson.

The cup was presented to prop forward Dafydd Lewis by Doug Jones, Accounts Manager of Molson Coors.

Scorers: Bedwas – Tries: M Stenner 2, M McCole, M Minty, C Bilton, J Armitage. Cons: K McCole 3.
