Gwyneth takes steps to good health

A great-grandmother who takes part in regular exercise at Llantwit Fardre Leisure Centre has celebrated her 90th birthday at the class she attends.

Gwyneth Swales of Efail Isaf takes part in the STEPS national exercise referral scheme held at the leisure centre near Pontypridd. She attends twice a week, taking part in gentle exercise, and has been described as ‘inspirational’ by her instructor Sam Belcher and fellow class members.

STEPS (Safe To Exercise Prescription Scheme) is run throughout Rhondda Cynon Taf for people who may benefit from some form of physical activity after illness.

“I’ve been coming about six weeks and I love it,” said Gwyneth, who has four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

“I have always loved exercise. Both my husband and I were walkers in our later years and I enjoy walking and gardening.”

Gwyneth was presented with a bouquet to mark her birthday and fellow class member Jackie Walsh said: “Gwyneth is an inspiration to anybody her age.”

Another class member Allan Phillips said: “Gwyneth is the oldest person working out in RCT! This is a tremendous group and I am really feeling the benefit of exercising. I have diabetes and now my sugar levels are down.”

Councillor Robert Bevan, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture and Recreation, said: “This is an excellent initiative provided throughout Rhondda Cynon Taf at our leisure centres. Exercise can often be an important part of the recovery process after illness and the road towards better health.

“The STEPS scheme facilitates this in a sensitive and effective way and the Council is pleased to take part in its delivery.”

To join the scheme, STEPS members must be referred by their GP or health care professional. Adults are invited to attend exercise sessions for 16 weeks.

Clients have at least two opportunities a week to take part in low-impact classes, which include circuits, gym-based circuits, water-based exercise and walking.

If you think you could benefit from the scheme, you would first need to visit your doctor who will complete an exercise referral form if you are eligible. This is then sent to the scheme co-ordinator in Rhondda Cynon Taf.

A member of the STEPS Exercise Referral Team will then contact you to schedule a meeting or consultation.
