New development on SA1 set to create 90 jobs

A £9million commercial development on SA1 Swansea Waterfront is due to open later this month and set to generate a significant economic boost for the city creating 90 jobs.

The new development, which overlooks the Prince of Wales Dock, comprises a 4,000 sq ft Tesco Express, a 343 cover Waterfront Beefeater Grill with indoor and outdoor seating and a 132 bed Premier Inn hotel.

During the construction phase up to ninety-five people were employed on the site that was acquired by Waterstone Estates (Swansea) Ltd from the Welsh Assembly Government and when fully operational around 90 people will be employed at the three outlets.

It sits within Market Square, a new open public realm area developed and landscaped by the Assembly Government. Construction was completed by  Welsh construction company, Jehu Project Services, ahead of schedule and the fit-out is now underway with the aim of opening later this month.

Ieuan Wyn Jones, Minister for the Economy and Transport, described the development as an important boost for the local economy.

“This investment has already provided employment for those working in the construction industry and will now create a significant number and range of jobs for local people which is very welcome in the current economic climate.

“It is also an important addition for SA1 providing a range of facilities that will benefit local residents and businesses and ensures it remains a key location for future investment.”

The development was a joint venture between specialist retail and leisure developer Actoris and Waterstone Estates. The project has been forward funded by Atlantic Property Developments Plc.

Matt Bryant, Director of Actoris said,

“We are extremely pleased to have carried out this significant development throughout very testing economic times. A collaborative approach has been vital to the success for the project and we have worked very closely with the contractor, Jehu Project Services to ensure that the development has been delivered well ahead of schedule. We hope to continue our working relationship with Jehu in the future.”

SA1 is a £400million flagship development by the Welsh Assembly Government that is transforming a disused dockland area into a dynamic and vibrant new quarter linked to the city centre.
