One of Sport.Cardiff’s main dance providers is launching a dance academy to give young people from all backgrounds the chance to perform at some of Wales’ biggest venues and events.
2 Step is a dance company that work closely with Sport.Cardiff, Cardiff Council’s Sport Development Team and delivers dance sessions in schools as well as providing community dance clubs around the city.
The demand for dance demonstrated through the Sport.Cardiff’s 5X60 scheme has lead to the development of the new provision.
It will allow young people to make the transition from school activity to community activity and then onto an academy and performances.
The academy will give the chance for young people in Cardiff to perform at some of the biggest events in Wales.
Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, Cllr Nigel Howells said: “The 5×60 project has been hugely successful and encourages school children to have fit and active lifestyles whilst also making sports activities available to young people in our local communities.
“Partnerships with local organisations such as 2 Step will allow children and young people in Cardiff to take part in sport and physical activity for life.”
Maria Katzi Director of 2 Step said: “We have worked across Cardiff and South Wales and seen the talent there is out there.
“This academy will be used to inspire young people of Cardiff and South Wales to take part in dance sessions through the Sport Cardiff 5×60 scheme and then into community dance clubs.”
The Sport Cardiff 5×60 project aims to make young people in Cardiff more active by taking part in 60 minutes of exercise five times a week.
It comprises a variety of different activities from which the children choose what they want to participate in. Activities include competitive, team and individual sports as well recreational activities such as climbing, dance and swimming.
