‘Hair today gone tomorrow’ appeal

Kieran McCann, Cardiff Council’s Student Liaison Officer has participated in a ‘Hair Today Gone Tomorrow’ hair appeal in aid of a charity which helps protect the environment.

Working with Johnsons Hairdressers, Kieran has had his head shaved in aid of the ‘Matter of Trust’ charity.  All hair from the salon and Kieran’s head shave will be used to help fight the oil slick that is affecting the Gulf of Mexico.  The hair will be sent to the charity which links up recycled goods with causes that need them.

The trust is co-coordinating the collection of hair, fur and tights which are needed to make booms and mats to mop up the oily mess spewing out of the sunken Deepwater Horizon oil platform on the seabed of the Gulf of Mexico. Hair and fur will typically soak up around four to six times their weight in oil.

The following Cardiff hair salons are offering to collect hair to help with the gulf appeal:

Keiran McCann said: “This oil spill is fast becoming one of the most devastating environmental disasters of our time. I am grateful to all those who have supported this initiative, donated to the WWF, sent words of encouragement and engaged with my hair appeal.

“My thanks go to Lindsey and Johnsons hairdressers for supporting me and shaving my locks off. I have been contacted by four hairdressers who are collecting hair to send to the gulf.  I appeal to hairdressers across Cardiff to get involved and sign up with Matter of Trust to help vulnerable wildlife and coastlines becoming further victims to this disaster.”

Donations can also be made to Kieran’s Just Giving charity page, http://www.justgiving.com/hairappeal where people can donate to the World Wildlife Fund which protects endangered wildlife and environments.
