£1.1million Funding for Affordable Housing in Wrexham

Wrexham Council works with housing associations to deliver affordable homes for people in the County Borough and 20 local families will be able to live in good quality, affordable homes thanks to a £1.1 million grant from the Welsh Assembly Government.

The Council secured the funding through the Welsh Assembly Government’s Strategic Capital Investment Fund (SCIF). It is being used to buy 10 brand new homes on 2 development sites and to fund 10 ‘Homebuy’ loans.

The two sites are on Rivulet Road where five two-bedroom and one four bedroom houses are being built for Wales & West Housing Association and at Glanyrafon in Rhostyllen where four three-bedroom houses have been bought by Cymdeithas Tai Clwyd. The houses at Rhostyllen are complete and have been let to local families.

One local couple to benefit from the funding are Peter and Llinos Davies. They are now living in a three bedroom property at the Rhostyllen development and are expecting their first child at the end of the year.

Previously they had lived in a one bedroom flat for 7 years and are now thrilled to be living in their new home.

Peter and Llinos said:

“We passed these properties as they were being built every morning on our way to work and we are delighted that we have been given the opportunity to live here. We first heard about the properties at a home buyers fair held at Glyndwr University and can’t believe that we’re now living here. The properties have been built to a high standard and we are looking forward to starting our family here in Rhostyllen.”

The Welsh Assembly’s ‘Homebuy’ scheme helps families who would struggle to afford a suitable home on the open market. Families are given a Homebuy loan of 30% of the price of a home of their choice. There is no interest to pay on the loan and it only needs to be repaid if the home is sold

Cllr Mark Pritchard, Lead Member for Housing and Planning said:

“This funding means we can deliver more affordable homes for local people. The Council has excellent working relationships with local housing associations, which help to provide good quality, affordable homes for people who live in the County Borough. I would like to thank the Welsh Assembly Government for the funding which has made all of this possible.”

Increasing the number of new affordable homes across the County Borough is one of the Council’s corporate priorities for 2009/2012.
