2,000 residents to trial blue recycling bags for cardboard and plastic

The Vale of Glamorgan Council has launched a pilot project where residents are being asked to use new recycling bags for both cardboard and plastic.

Through until June, 2010, residents in Peterston-super-Ely, Stanwell (Penarth) and Illtyd (Barry) will be asked to trial the reusable blue bags as an alternative to their current kerbside boxes.

The waste management and cleansing division initiative will involve 2,000 residents who will be asked for their feedback, via questionnaires, at the end of the trial.

The bags, on which residents may wish to write their house/flat name or number, are very similar to the reusable green garden bags already in circulation.

All the items currently placed in a kerbside box can go in the blue bag such as flattened cardboard, clean bottles/food containers and plastic bags.

All bags should be left at the kerbside by 7am on the household’s usual recycling collection day.

Cabinet member for visible and building services Cllr Geoff Cox said: “Although residents are not obliged to use the blue bags, we are hoping for their support for this initiative and to trial them as an alternative to the kerbside box.

“The bags hold more than boxes so, in theory, residents can recycle more. We would emphasise that reducing or reusing as much waste as possible is a priority.”
