£4.9million for Llanelli’s new state-of-the-art school

Education Minister, Leighton Andrews today joined pupils at Ysgol Maes y Morfa in Llanelli to celebrate the opening of their new state-of-the-art school.

With the help of £4.9million of Capital Funding the old Ysgol Maes y Morfa has been completely reformed. The shell of the old school has been retained but the interior has been transformed into a school fit for the 21st Century.

New facilities at the school include interactive white boards in every class room, interactive plasma screen TVs and a smart table – an interactive learning centre that allows pupils to work simultaneously on one table and is one of few available in schools across the whole of the UK.

The play areas have also been developed to include ball parks and all-weather play centres, as well as play areas for the nursery children.

Leighton Andrews said:

“The Welsh Assembly Government is committed to creating the right learning environment for our children, in school buildings fit for the 21st Century. Ysgol Maes y Morfa is an excellent example of how we are implementing this programme.

“As well as awarding £4.9million in Capital Funding to provide pupils and teachers with the latest in technology and exceptional play facilities, we have also awarded over £140,000 for Flying Start equipment and office equipment.

“I hope that both the teaching staff and pupils at Ysgol Maes y Morfa enjoy their new school and its many exciting features.”

The school is part of Carmarthenshie County Council’s £200 million Modernising Education Provision programme, and is the fourth new school to be built in Llanelli in recent years.
