Gwynedd Council’s Schools portfolio leader, Councillor Liz Saville Roberts, has welcomed the news that the Council has secured £5.5 of Welsh Assembly Government funding to invest in school buildings for children in the Tywyn area.
The £5.5 million has been secured to build a new flagship area school to replace four schools in this catchment area, subject to the statutory consultation process endorsing the Council’s proposals to close these schools.
The funding will also enable the Council to invest in three other schools to bring them up to the Assembly Government’s 21st Century Schools standard. These schools are – Ysgol Pen-y-Bryn, Tywyn; Ysgol Corris and Ysgol Pennal.
Councillor Liz Saville Roberts who leads on Schools on Gwynedd Council said:
“As a Council we have set out a clear strategy to takes us from the current situation where many of our schools buildings are no longer fit for purpose to a position where every Gwynedd pupil is educated in modern facilities which offer them every possible opportunity to fulfil their potential.
“The fact that the Welsh Assembly Government has approved our bid is great news for the Tywyn catchment area, which will benefit directly and a huge boost for our wider project to bring all Gwynedd school buildings up to standard.”
Gwynedd Council Leader Councillor Dyfed Edwards added:
“Today’s announcement is great news for the Tywyn area and a real vote of confidence by the Minister and the Welsh Assembly Government in Gwynedd Council’s strategy to bring all our primary schools up to the required standard.
“The fact that the government is backing our proposals for the Tywyn area with this pot of money is an excellent start for the improvement programme that we are currently developing for other parts of the county.”
