£5 Million School Officially Opened in Rhosymedre

Rhosymedre’s new £5 million primary school has been officially opened by the Rt Reverend John S Davies, retired Bishop of Saint Asaph.

The school has a U shaped layout and conforms to the BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) the leading and most widely used environmental assesment standard for buildings.

It boasts sustainable features including solar thermal panels to provide heating to the domestic hot water system for the kitchens and toilet facilities. Underfloor heating is provided via a ground or air source heat pump unit.

Lightfittings are of a high efficiency LED light source and lighting controls have been incorporated in the design to optimise the use of natural daylight.

Ecological works on the site include a new pond to attract wildlife, bird and bat boxes and bat friendly lights.

The 210 place school was built by contractors Watkin Jones.

Graham Davies, Construction Managing Director for Watkin Jones commented;

“We are proud of our involvement within the Rhosymedre Community School and our role on this project went further than that of a contractor. Continuing with the community driven ethos of the business, we worked closely with both pupils and staff at the school with various initiatives, such as; funding a transitional support scheme for year 5 pupils with moderate learning difficulties into their final year at the school. Throughout the construction period, Year 6 pupils learnt about various construction roles and their involvement within the project. The success of the scheme should be attributed to the entire team to include, WS Atkins, ISP and Giffords for their unwavering commitment and the invaluable support shown by Wrexham Borough Council.”

Headteacher, Liz Edwards, said:

“This is a very proud day for the school and I am very pleased to welcome so many people here to share it with us. Parents, governors, staff and pupils are all delighted with the new school and we are all looking to a bright future in a community primary school that provides an enhanced learning environment for everyone.”

John Davies, Head of Lifelong Learning, said:

“It is essential that our young people are taught in an environment that brings out their full potential. We are grateful to the Welsh Government for their funding for this and other projects throughout the county borough. I know everyone associated with this school has been delighted with its completion and the future for education in Rhosymedre looks very bright.”

Other educational improvements in Wrexham works are ongoing and in Llay, works to to provide a £4.5 million extension for the infant and pre school class, safety and access improvements and the refurbishment of the existing junior school and currently on schedule for completion in September.
