Cardiff Council has succeeded in winning Welsh Government funding for an energy efficiency scheme. A total grant of £789,673.50 has been awarded to support an ECO funding proposal to retrofit external wall insulation to approximately 150 homes on the Brynfedw Estate.
The WG Wales Infrastructure Investment Plan has made additional capital funding available for local authorities to undertake energy efficiency projects with environmental, social and economic objectives such as reducing fuel poverty, improving energy performance in existing homes and generating jobs.
Cabinet member for Environment, Cllr Ashley Govier said, ‘This administration has made energy efficiency a top priority across the whole council spectrum with our One Planet agenda. Brynfedw will now benefit from the latest state-of-the-art energy efficiency techniques such as over-cladding that will not only maximise carbon reduction and help bring down energy bills but also improve the appearance of the homes involved. I’m so pleased we’ve worked so well with Welsh Government on this important project and gained maximum benefit for our residents at no cost to the Council in one of the most deprived wards in the city.’
Cabinet member for Community & Neighbourhood Regeneration and Social Justice, Lynda Thorne said, ’Brynfedw was chosen as it completely fitted the criteria of being a deprived area with high levels of fuel poverty and low-income households characterised by hard-to-treat properties. I’m delighted our team did such a good job in preparing the bid and securing the funding in full as initiatives such as these make a real difference to peoples’ lives and transform the look and feel of the local environment.’
Melin Homes will undertake the project for the Council with work set to start in February and run through to July. The project will include maximising Community Benefits as well as providing employment & training opportunities in the city.
