A report is going to Cabinet on the 10th April following publication of the statutory notice published in February to establish a new build school combined with the existing community centre premises in Pontprennau, located at Heol Pontprennau, and recommends that the plans are taken forward.

The new school will have a capacity of 420 primary school places and will accommodate pupils aged 3 – 11, including a nursery, which will provide 48 full time equivalent places. It’s proposed that the new school will open in 2015.

As part of the plans, the Council has reviewed the school catchment areas and consulted on establishing a catchment area for the proposed new school in Pontprennau, and on an associated revision of neighbouring English-medium primary school catchment areas. Recommendations on a proposed catchment area for the new school are contained in a further Cabinet report also being considered at the April 10th meeting.

Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, Cllr Julia Magill said, “We need to establish a school in this area of Cardiff in order to meet local demand.

“The proposed changes to the catchment areas are necessary to achieve a balance between the catchment area of the new school, and the revised Bryn Celyn Primary School and Glyncoed Primary School catchment areas. We are committed to driving up standards in education across the city and ensuring children have the best possible learning opportunities.

“These new proposals will provide additional places to serve the local area in Pontprennau and would also ensure that areas like Llanishen, Lisvane and Thornhill are more able to meet their local demand.”

Parents, carers and residents in the local community were invited to share their opinions and views on the proposals.

The revised catchment area arrangements would be implemented from September 2015, when the proposed new Pontprennau School opens.
