Two Sports Leaders UK Leadership Academies, Coleg Gwent and The Newark Academy, were presented with the Sports Leaders UK Leadership Academy of Year award, during a reception at the House of Lords on 01 April 2014.

A brand new award, the Sports Leaders UK Leadership Academy of the Year recognises one school and one further education college that ‘go the extra mile’ to deliver Sports Leaders UK courses and qualifications to a high level of success whilst acting as beacons of good practice to other organisations in their local area.

Shelley Meyern, National Development Manager, Sports Leaders UK, said: “Both Coleg Gwent and The Newark Academy displayed remarkable achievements in promoting sports leadership in their respective local areas, having developed a range of creative ideas which go beyond the learning outcomes of our awards and qualifications. They both offer their learners a pathway of additional opportunities and a package of initiatives that motivate and inspire people to take part in sports leadership and volunteering.”

Coleg Gwent’s Crosskeys Campus in Caerphilly was awarded Sports Leaders UK Leadership Academy status in 2012.

Mererid Dark, Sport Lecturer at Coleg Gwent said: “It was a great honour to win this national award and collect the trophy from Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson on behalf of Sport and Public Services students and staff at Coleg Gwent’s Crosskeys Campus.

“We help students achieve their Sports Leadership qualifications, but our students are the ones who put such tremendous effort into volunteering, and excel well beyond the minimum hours required to benefit their local communities.  We are very proud that their dedication and commitment have been recognised with this national award.”
