Sporting venues in Wales are excluding disabled people as access is generally poor, according to Labour’s Vale of Clwyd AM, Ann Jones. Speaking at First Minister’s Questions, Ms Jones asked the First Minister what the Welsh Government could do to encourage rugby and football clubs to improve access for those with a disability.
Ms Jones, a lifelong fan of Rhyl Town FC said: “At far too many of our FAW clubs and at rugby grounds, disabled fans are not able to enjoy the match because they are not able to access the stadia due to lack of facilities.
“A lack of disabled toilets, ramps and dedicated seating areas are sadly freezing people out of their local grounds – rendering them unable to go along and support their local team.
“Clubs do have a legal duty to ensure that there are sufficient facilities which allow disabled people to access stadia and I am concerned that many clubs do not meet their obligations.
“I am seeking for fair play for disabled people and adaptations are not too onerous a cost”.
The First Minister confirmed that he would ask the Sport Minister to raise the issue with the FAW.
